Bukit Lawang trekking FAQ

What should I pack for a Bukit Lawang trek?

Trekking shoes with grip, quick-dry long trousers and top, leech socks or long socks, swimwear, a change of clothes, DEET repellent, sunscreen, head torch, 1.5L water bottle, personal medication, a dry bag for tubing, and cash. Porters carry the camping gear and food.

Are there leeches in Bukit Lawang?

Yes, especially after rain. They're harmless. Tuck trousers into long socks or wear leech socks, and your guide will help remove any.

When is the best time to trek in Bukit Lawang?

Treks run year-round. Drier months are easier underfoot; the wetter months bring mud, leeches and fewer visitors. Light rain rarely stops a trek; in heavy rain guides change the route for safety.

Is Bukit Lawang a malaria area?

It isn't considered a malaria area, but dengue occurs, so use repellent at dusk and at night. Recommended vaccines often include hepatitis A and B and typhoid; check with your doctor.

Is there medical care nearby?

There is a basic clinic in Bukit Lawang. Hospitals are in Medan, 3–4 hours away, so travel insurance covering trekking and evacuation is essential.

Can children trek?

Yes, from 5 years old on family treks with extra guides. We'll suggest a gentle route.

Do you cater for special diets?

Vegetarian, vegan, allergy and religious diets are all fine. Tell us when you book.

How do I pay and should I tip?

Treks are paid in cash (euro or rupiah). Tipping isn't expected but appreciated: IDR 50,000–100,000 for excellent service, given directly to guides, porters or drivers.

What are the toilets like on the trek?

Camps have a basic toilet on a wooden platform. On the trail, it's behind a tree.

Do you feed the orangutans?

Never. Feeding makes orangutans dependent and aggressive, and spreads disease. Our guides find orangutans by tracking, and we keep at least 10 metres away.

Pick your dates. We'll do the rest.

Send us a WhatsApp with your dates and group size. We'll confirm availability, suggest the right trek, and can book your transfer from Medan and a guesthouse by the river.
