2-day jungle trek in Bukit Lawang
Our most popular trek and the best introduction to Gunung Leuser National Park. One big day in the forest, one night by the river, and a tube ride home.

2-day trek itinerary
Orangutans, leaf monkeys and a river camp
After pick-up you cross into the national park and spend 6–7 hours on the trail, looking for orangutans, Thomas leaf monkeys and gibbons. Your guide shows you how to read the jungle: fresh nests, feeding signs, medicinal plants. Lunch is served in the forest (vegetarian on request). In the afternoon you reach a riverside camp for a swim, then a multi-dish Indonesian dinner by candlelight.
A new trail and the tube ride home
Breakfast is cooked at camp. You set off on a different route to the day before, which gives you a second chance at wildlife, then climb onto a train of tubes lashed together and ride the Bohorok River rapids back into Bukit Lawang.
Why most people choose 2 days
If you're travelling around Sumatra on a tight schedule, two days hits the sweet spot. You see the forest at its liveliest in the late afternoon and early morning, sleep under the canopy, and still have time for Lake Toba or Berastagi afterwards.
If you can spare one more day, the 3-day trek takes you further from the busy trails and adds a jungle waterfall.
