What happens on a 1-day trek

  1. Morning · Into the national park

Your guide meets you at your guesthouse and you walk past the rubber gardens to the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park. From here the trail climbs into the forest. Your guide listens for branches moving, checks fresh nests and fruiting trees, and explains the medicinal plants along the way.

  2. Late morning · Looking for orangutans

This part of the forest is home to semi-wild orangutans, many of them mothers with babies, as well as Thomas leaf monkeys, long-tailed macaques and white-handed gibbons. You watch from a respectful distance and never feed them. On the half-day trek you start walking back to the village around now.

  3. Midday · Jungle lunch (full day)

On the full-day trek you stop for lunch in the forest: nasi goreng wrapped in a banana leaf and a plate of tropical fruit. Then you carry on along a different loop, which gives you a second chance at wildlife, and come down to the river in the afternoon.

Is one day enough?

If you only have a day in Bukit Lawang, a day trek is absolutely worth it, and many people see orangutans within a few hours. What you miss is the jungle at dusk and dawn, when the forest is loudest, and the night in a riverside camp.

If you can add one night, the 2-day trek (€120) is the one most people remember as the highlight of their Sumatra trip.

1-day trek questions

How much is a 1-day trek in Bukit Lawang?

A half-day (3-hour) trek is €55 per person and a full-day trek is €70 per person, based on a minimum of two people. These are the official 2025–2026 rates of the Indonesian Tourist Guide Association (HPI) in Bukit Lawang.

Will I see orangutans on a 1-day trek?

There's a good chance. Several semi-wild orangutans, many of them former rehabilitation centre residents and their babies, live close to the village, so even a half day often brings a sighting. They are still free-living animals, so it's never guaranteed.

Half day or full day: which should I choose?

Choose the half day if you only have a morning or are travelling with children. Choose the full day if you can: you go further into the forest, have lunch in the jungle and see more wildlife, including Thomas leaf monkeys, macaques and hornbills.

What time does the day trek start?

Around 8:30 in the morning, with pick-up from your guesthouse. The half-day trek is back around midday; the full day finishes mid-afternoon.

Is the 1-day trek difficult?

The trails are steep, muddy and humid in places, but a reasonably fit beginner manages fine. Your guide sets the pace and there are plenty of breaks.

Can I do a day trek the day I arrive?

Usually not, because the bus or car from Medan takes about 3–4 hours. Most people arrive one day and trek the next morning. Message us and we'll plan it around your transfer.

Pick your dates. We'll do the rest.

Send us a WhatsApp with your dates and group size. We'll confirm availability, suggest the right trek, and can book your transfer from Medan and a guesthouse by the river.
