Why Batu Katak

Caves, waterfalls and wild orangutans

Batu Katak is a farming village of rubber gardens and rice fields on the edge of Gunung Leuser. Very few trekkers come here, so the trails are quiet and the orangutans are fully wild. They're shyer than the Bukit Lawang orangutans and harder to find, but meeting one here feels like a real discovery.

The forest has its own character: limestone outcrops and crevices, a water cave you wade into by head torch, waterfalls, and two of the world's strangest plants, the Amorphophallus titanum and the Rafflesia, which bloom only now and then.

Be ready for heat, humidity, steep sections and leeches after rain.

Batu Katak questions

How far is Batu Katak from Bukit Lawang?

About 30–45 minutes by road. From Kualanamu Airport in Medan it's roughly 4–4.5 hours.

Batu Katak or Bukit Lawang: which is better?

Bukit Lawang has more orangutans that are used to people, so sightings are more likely, but the trails are busier. Batu Katak is quieter and wilder with caves and waterfalls, but orangutans are harder to find. If you can't decide, do the 4-day combo.

Can I do the combo trek on my own?

Yes. The combo is €250 per person for two people; solo travellers pay a €90 supplement. Large luggage can be moved between the villages for IDR 200,000.
